Here Are The 10 Most Insanely Dangerous Airstrips In The World. NOPE, Not Going There.

These are the most dangerous airports from around the world. They lack paved runways, long runways, fair weather and general sanity. If you have a layover at any of these airports, you might want to start crossing your fingers now for good measure.
1) Ice Runway, Antarctica: This stretch of snow and ice has ZERO paved runways. The ice runway is an airstrip that helps supply Antartica’s McMurdo Station.

The super-sized aircraft like the C-130 Hercules and the C-17 Globemaster III have more than enough room to land, but the trick is making sure the ice doesn’t burst when they DO land.

If the ice begins to break up, the planes are redirected to other fields… where it hopefully isn’t breaking up.

“Routine” isn’t necessarily a word they hear often.

And there is a lot of clenching.

2) Congonhas Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil: This airport is only 5 miles from the city center.

That means, the airport built in the 1930s doesn’t have a lot of room.

Pilots have little to no margin for error during landings and take-offs.

3) Courchevel International Airport, Courchevel, France: This airstrip is 1,700 feet long with a HILL in the middle of the strip.

And to get to this insane airstrip, you must navigate through the French Alps.

4) Gibraltar Airport: This small British territory between Morocco and Spain had its airport built during WWII.

There isn’t much room for the airstrip.

So it cuts through every day life.

Beep, beep.

5) Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Saba, Netherlands Antilles: It’s only 1,300 feet long.

An alternate name for this airport should be “Good Luck.”

Pilots require extra care and concentration when using this paradise’s airport.

One wrong move and you’d be in the water.

Luckily, only small aircraft land here.

6) Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan: Due to land scarcity, engineers built this airport in the water.

It’s 3 miles offshore in Osaka Bay

7) Madeira International Airport, Madeira, Portugal: The small island away from the coast and the airport only has 5,000 feet.

The hazardous airport greatly limits tourism.

It poses a threat to even the most experienced pilots.

8) Lukla Airport, Nepal: Many people begin their Mt. Everest trek from this city in Nepal. There is a lot of traffic between here and Kathmandu. As planes land, sirens inform people to take caution.

There is an uphill runway on the side of a mountain.

9) Princess Juliana International Airport, Simpson Bay, Saint Maarten: This famous runway is right next to a beach, causing the planes to land right overhead of tourists.

Many people enjoy the rush of watching a landing.

Although the planes come closer than most people think.

Even the force from the engines can harm onlookers.

10) Svalbard Airport, Svalbard, Norway: This airport is within the archipelago of the Svalbard which is a cluster of Norwegian islands that sits in the Arctic Ocean.

There are two other airports, but this one is solely used for commercial flights.

It’s the world’s northernmost airport that tourists may go.

If you like lots of ice and freezing cold…

Svalbard is for you.
